The Weekly Edge: Kuzu Release, GraphRAG Course, Graph Theory, & More [18 July 2025]

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Weekly Edge!

This new blog series from gdotv aims to curate some of the most interesting slices of news and content from across the graph tech ecosystem in the past seven days (or so).

There’s always so much happening in the world of graph databases, graph query languages, graph analytics, graph data science, graph visualization, and other graph technology that a full roundup would be too enormous to undertake. The Weekly Edge is your tl;dr of graph tech news handpicked for fresh thinking, timely announcements, and a bit of learning to keep you on the edge of what’s next.

// A brief introduction: If you don’t know me already, I’m Bryce Merkl Sasaki, a writer and editor based in Silicon Valley. I was the Editor in Chief at Neo4j from 2015-21, and I’ve written and edited content for a wide range of graph vendors over the years – including gdotv. In addition to the Weekly Edge, I also edit the fortnightly Knowledge Graph Conference newsletter, and I’m a proud owner of a GraphGeeks T-shirt. 🐙

Let’s dive into this week’s content.

Video/Podcast: GraphGeeks in Discussion: Building a Word Game with Graph Pathfinding

If you’re not already subscribed to the GraphGeeks podcast (YouTube | Spotify | Apple Podcasts), you’re missing out. Amy Hodler is an old friend and colleague who co-founded the GraphGeeks community for graph beginners, enthusiasts, and veterans alike.

In this latest episode of the podcast, founder and game designer Michael Douma discusses “In Other Words,” a daily word puzzle that uses semantic relationships, and pathfinding through connected concepts. If you like words (like me) or if you just like ontologies and graph theory (like most people), this is a great episode to catch up with.

Product Release: Kuzu 0.11.0 Is Here!

Kuzu is one of the many graph technologies supported by G.V(), and the Kuzu team just unveiled a new release of their graph database.
The Kuzu 0.11.0 release supports single-file databases, improves vector and full-text search indexes, includes a new LLM extension, adds some boring-but-important improvements for Azure users, introduces a new Swift API, and updates some Cypher features. Check out this brief user demo gif on LinkedIn or dive into the release notes on GitHub. Congrats to the Kuzu team!

Developer Deep Dive: A Graph-Native Workflow Application using Neo4j/Cypher

This long-form article by Marcos Pinedo on Medium isn’t as much a blog post as it is a complete developer-oriented walkthrough of building a tendering system proof-of-concept (POC) using Neo4j and Cypher. While not required reading, the walkthrough builds on Pinedo’s previous articles on graph modeling, Cypher, and building a POC ride-hailing app.

Complete with robust instructions, explanations, graph visualizations, GitHub code, and even two appendices, this walkthrough gives you a comprehensive understanding of how to use a graph database like Neo4j and the Cypher query language to solve real-world challenges. While maybe not perfect for an absolute beginner, this walkthrough is a great graph project for someone ready to take their skills to an intermediate level.

Course: GraphRAG Essential Training by Dr. Claire Sullivan

In addition to being a former colleague and fellow Coloradoan, Dr. Claire Sullivan is one of the foremost experts on GraphRAG (retrieval-augmented generation), and now she has a LinkedIn Learning course “GraphRAG Essential Training” to teach you the fundamentals of this approach that straddles the graph and genAI worlds.

This beginner-friendly course shows you how to combine knowledge graphs with generative AI to improve your app’s contextual awareness and precision (i.e., fewer hallucinations, please). Dr. Sullivan has two decades of data science expertise and a knack for breaking down concepts in an easy-to-understand way. Highly recommended for anyone looking to level up their GraphRAG game.

Interview: How Does Graph Theory Shape Our World?

 graph-theory-interview-maria-chudnovsky-quanta-magazine-podcast

Not all graph devs are graph theory nerds too, but more of us are than we might care to admit.

This Quanta Magazine interview (and podcast) with graph theorist Maria Chudnovsky of Princeton University explores how graph theory – the mathematics that underpins all graph database technology – touches almost every part of our modern lives from social networks to airline routes and more. Part-memoir, part-exposition, part-reflection, this interview is a guilty-pleasure listen for anyone wanting to go deeper into the world of abstract graphs.
