These are the tools gdotv's MCP server offers to AI agents. Agents choose the tools themselves: you don't need to name them, but the names show up in your client's tool list and confirmation prompts.
Each tool checks your access first. Permission is what your role needs on the connection, as in gdotv. A client only lists the tools you are allowed to use somewhere. Tools marked Licence need an active gdotv licence or free trial: on gdotv Desktop, generating the MCP token starts the free trial, and licences are at gdotv.com/buy.
Connections
| Tool | What it does | Permission | Licence |
|---|
list_connections | Lists the connections you can see, with their database type and query languages. | None | |
describe_connection | Shows one connection's details: host, authentication type, graphs, languages, and whether it allows writes through MCP. Never returns passwords or keys. | View | |
list_graphs | Lists the graphs available on a multi-graph connection, such as FalkorDB or Spanner Graph. | View | |
list_procedures | Lists the procedures and functions the database offers, such as APOC or GDS. | View | |
test_connection | Checks that a saved connection is reachable and its credentials work. | View | |
Adding connections
| Tool | What it does | Permission | Licence |
|---|
get_gdotv_environment | Says which gdotv this is (Desktop, Team or Enterprise), where connections are made from, and what your role allows on each connection. | None | |
list_database_types | Lists the database types gdotv supports and the settings each one needs. | Create connections | |
test_connection_settings | Tests connection settings without saving them, and explains what to fix when they don't work. | Create connections | |
create_connection | Saves a new connection, after testing it. | Create connections | |
Schema and queries
| Tool | What it does | Permission | Licence |
|---|
list_schema | Reads a connection's schema: labels, relationship types and their properties. | View schema | Licence |
validate_query | Checks a query without running it: its syntax, on gdotv Team and Enterprise its labels and properties, the database's own plan (EXPLAIN) where the database has one, and the database's own warnings, such as an unknown label on Neo4j. On BigQuery, the plan is a dry run: it shows how much data the query would read. The plan needs the Run queries permission. | View schema | Licence |
execute_query | Runs a query and returns its totals, a small sample and a link to the full result in gdotv. Can also profile the run, on databases that support it. Only reads unless the connection allows writes through MCP. | Run queries | Licence |
get_query_result | Pages through a result that execute_query produced. | Run saved queries | Licence |
list_query_tabs | Lists the query tabs you have open in gdotv, and which one is on screen. | Run queries | Licence |
update_query_tab | Puts a query in front of you without running it: writes it into one of your open tabs, or gives you a link that opens it in a new tab, such as a change for you to review and run yourself. | Run queries | Licence |
Dashboards
| Tool | What it does | Permission | Licence |
|---|
list_dashboards | Lists a connection's dashboards, including your drafts. | View | Licence |
get_dashboard | Reads one dashboard: tabs, panels, queries and parameters. | View | Licence |
list_dashboard_panel_types | Lists the panel types and the result each one expects. | Create dashboards | |
create_dashboard | Creates a dashboard as your private draft. | Create dashboards | Licence |
update_dashboard | Changes a dashboard: adds, moves or edits panels, tabs and parameters. A published dashboard is changed through a draft. | Edit | Licence |
run_dashboard_panel | Runs one panel's query and checks its result suits the panel type. | Run saved queries | Licence |
publish_dashboard | Makes a draft available to everyone who uses the connection. | Create dashboards | Licence |
discard_dashboard_draft | Throws away your draft, after you confirm. The published dashboard is untouched. | Create dashboards | Licence |
Reports
| Tool | What it does | Permission | Licence |
|---|
list_reports | Lists a connection's reports (saved queries), including your drafts. | View | Licence |
get_report | Reads one report: query, parameters, folder and status. | View | Licence |
create_report | Creates a report as your private draft. | Create queries | Licence |
update_report | Changes a report. A published report is changed through a draft. | Create queries | Licence |
run_report | Runs a report the way its users do, with parameter values checked against their types. | Run saved queries | Licence |
publish_report | Makes a draft report available in Saved Queries for everyone who uses the connection. | Create queries | Licence |
discard_report_draft | Throws away your draft, after you confirm. The published report is untouched. | Create queries | Licence |
Results returned to agents
To keep answers fast and within the agent's context, results are trimmed:
execute_query returns a sample of 25 nodes, 25 relationships and 25 rows by default (up to 100), and shrinks it further if the response would be too large. It says exactly what was left out.- The full result stays in gdotv: agents page through it with
get_query_result, or give you a link to see it all in gdotv. - Long values are abbreviated.
Server administrators can change these limits with the GDOTV_MCP_DEFAULT_SAMPLE_SIZE, GDOTV_MCP_MAX_PAGE_LIMIT and GDOTV_MCP_RESPONSE_BUDGET_CHARS environment variables.
